Role Models and Mentors (repost)

Throughout our lives we all have people we look up to for guidance and inspiration. As a child we probably had role models that may have included sports figures, rock stars, and most certainly our parents. As we grew and entered the working world there were no doubt older, experienced co-workers that may have helped us learn specific talents for the job we were performing.

"... mentoring occurs from various sources and that largely depends on the openness and accessibility to the leadership
at the top of your organization."

In the MLM world, most organizations encourage new recruits to seek a mentor from within the business to assist with learning the ropes. Most often there is an expectation that your personal sponsor would serve as your mentor. Occasionally, that person may not have the background or experience. Perhaps you would then seek guidance from further up the line of sponsorship until you were able to find someone with the knowledge to help you. This sounds reasonable, doesn't it?

I am certain that most organization offer some sort of supplemental or advanced training from within their own business. I am also certain that some organization will ostracize members that seek counsel outside the established line of sponsorship. Now I ask again, does that sounds reasonable or even practical?

In my current business I am very fortunate to have a great mentor as my personal sponsor. All too often, I believe this is not the case for many people.
I believe that in MLM, mentoring occurs from various sources and that largely depends on the openness and accessibility to the leadership at the top of your organization. Do they encourage using mastermind groups with associates outside your LOS? Are the leaders at the top available to receive phone calls from you with questions?

When most people think of the word mentor, they most often imagine a close personal relationship spanning many years. In business, these relationships are rare. As a result, most networkers take their mentoring a variety of sources. As an adult, I should be able to seek the knowledge I require from whatever source I can without being penalized by the very people that will receive benefit by my improved knowledge.

By the way, my mother and father continue to be my most cherished role models.

Network Marketing 101 - Systems

W hen I first started my career in Network Marketing, I was introduced to the concept of building my business "on system". In this context, what it meant was subscribing to a proprietary training and motivation program. This system was labeled as an educational system and often compared itself to a college education.

For some reading this, you probably groaned loudly when you read my headline. Now hold on a second before you assume or jump to conclusions. I am talking here about utilizing your company's system or if one is not in place, developing one.

Using a system process will accelerate the learning curve for your new partners in your enterprise. Using a system process will assist you in developing consistent habits for the most productive use of your time. Using a system process will aid in communicating the conceptual foundations for your business.

"... the bottom line is does your system produce results and are people
achieving success by using it."

Some organizations have developed a series of activities often referred to as a formula or steps. I have worked with an "eight-step pattern" and a "six-step process" and your company may have similar terminology. The significance of whatever process is being utilized is who is the focus and subject of the process. What ever verbiage is used to identify the process, the bottom line is does your system produce results and are people achieving success by using it.

If any part of the process includes enrolling or subscribing to the process, I would suggest that system may be based more on the movement of "educational materials" rather than primarily skills development or business support. Though I believe strongly in training and education and motivation, I do not support training that only produces perennial students. I personally believe that training programs and the business process should occupy different orbits and intersect very infrequently.

We should be seeking to receive training about how to guide a prospective business associate or customer through the information pipeline. There should be defined "checkpoints" that are used to determine level of interest and qualification. We should also be seeking to receive training of the technical issues related to the operation of our business.

The marketplace offers an ever-increasing resource of information and materials to help the ambitious networker. There is no excuse for anyone to claim that they did not receive the information they needed. If your company does not offer training, it is your responsibility to seek it out if you are serious about your career. If your company DOES have a training program in place, are you utilizing it? Most importantly, are you taking action upon the things that you are learning and making things happen for yourself?

The best system in the world will not replace the necessity of YOU needing to do the work.

Tips to make more money

This article from Noah Ulrich -

Network Marketing is an excellent way for the "average Joe or Jane" to make an extra income. This business concept has been around for decades, and it will not disappear any time soon. The reason for its popularity is simple... It Works! It does however, require lots of work and most importantly, dedication and persistance to get the job done. The best part is, once you are able to set up a solid network, your business becomes MUCH less time intensive. Almost like going on "autopilot". The key is to get there as fast as possible.

Here are just a couple of tips I have found to be helpful in maximizing your Network Marketing Business:

1. Use your products regularly. This is Number 1 for a reason, this is the most ignored part of ANY network marketing business. How do you expect your business to succeed if you will not even use your own products? It does seem silly to even have to bring this up, but there are many who are not using their own products, and wonder why they are not making any money. Make a commitment to use your products for a year, and see where your business goes.

9 more ideas - read here.

Big Happenings

I  had actually begun writing two different posts intended for the Network Marketing 101 series but I have been sidetracked by a tremendous new opportunity that has been offered.

There are still some details that need to be finalized but I can share this tidbit.

The Inferno Tour by Doug and Jodi Andros Firebaugh will be coming to Indianapolis in mid-November. I am assisting with making the local arrangements for the venue with another networker in the area. We will be confirming the behind-the-scenes issues in the next few days and Doug will be updating his website at that time.

What's more exiting for me is that Doug has offered for me to be a guest speaker at this event. (I can only hope he knows what he is getting himself into by having me speak.)

I will supply additional details shortly.

We now return to your regularly scheduled program.

Some Will and Some Won't

S o, you joined a networking company and didn't meet with expected success? Have you been confronted by critics of the business concept with words like "scam", "pyramid", "ponzi scheme"? Some have become disgruntled because "the business didn't work for them". No kidding. This is not exclusive to network marketing organizations. Yes, some companies may have a better core structure than others and yes, some companies have a better record of successful business development. The bottom line, in ANY business, there must be people that will participate in a successful endeavor. Those that will be the clients and those that will do the work to gain the clients.

Here's a snip from a post at MLM Blog that touches on a fundamental element that is a stumbling block for some with an history involved in NM.

Pretend Network Marketing
Network Marketing is not a viable business opportunity for the average person.

Why? Probably two reasons.

1. The average person is not willing to put forth the effort it takes to be an entrepreneur.

Network Marketing 101 - Goal Achieving

H ere are a few ideas about, not only, setting goals but also giving yourself a better chance to achieve them. The easy part is the goal setting stage but, for most, the process of achieving your goals and dreams require a systematic, disciplined approach. There are no accidents. Lasting success, in any pursuit, will not find you. You must seek it, put yourself into situations to receive it, be available emotionally to receive it, and be disciplined enough to earn it.

Here are a few thought about goals:

Make a list of your values.
What is important to you? What do you hold most dear? Your chosen goals should enhance these values and serve to enrich them.

Begin with the end in mind.
Visualize a clear vision of what your success with look like.

Write down ten things that you want this year.
This list will aid to create images in your mind. These mental images of the specific things you seek will give you a focal point for your energies.

Focus on one project at a time.
This will prevent you from diffusing your efforts. It will also help you establish momentum by realizing cascading success as you complete your desired objectives.

80/20 Paradigm

W e have all heard of the 80/20 rule at one time or another. Michael Oliver, creator of Natural Selling, wrote about what could happen if we could change our view of the Paretto Principle.

Most people in my experience have heard of the 20/80 rule. This is where it's said that 20% of the people do 80% of the business!

This is a rule that I accepted for many years because it appeared to be true... Until I discovered for myself another truth!

It happened many years ago when I was attending a convention. As a courtesy I went to introduce myself to a distributor whom I had not met before, though I had trained some of his downline. Read more ...

My friend Dave

I n his post titled, "Don't Dave, Don't" friend Dave Robison at On The Road With Dave elaborates on a series he composed called "MLM Quit Date".

Some have said that I have "lot's to teach others", and my proposed departure from MLM would negatively affect some of my readers, possibly driving them away from the MLM industry. Still others, were quick to tell me of their "great opportunity" in THEIR MLM, if I decide to quit.

I agree, I have "lot's to teach". I like expressing my thoughts on how an MLM business should be ran ethically. I think I have some good ideas toward that end.

BUT.

If you wish to read great writing that is at once - honest, unique, humorous, insightful, and compelling; be sure to check Dave Robison's blog. Dave has been a source of encouragement and support for me personally and I think he offers a viewpoint that is sorely needed in our profession.

"I'm going to start this post by saying that the subject I want to touch on will need several posts to make it more reader friendly. I want to go back to an earlier post where I talked about the "vision thing". I am going to talk about the process more in depth and how I've made it work for me and hopefully make it usable for others."

Network Marketing 101 - Pick Your Partners

I can remember being new to Network Marketing. I can remember being excited about my program and products. I believed that EVERYONE would want to sign up into my business. I recall the anxiety associated with the first phone call made to invite one of my friends to a presentation using the dreaded "curiosity approach". I recall my first dose of the harsh reality of network marketing after facing several "no's" or "is this a pyramid?" or "is this MLM?" or the worst one, "is this Amway?". I was thrown to the wolves and I was handed my hat.

"I experienced many negatives and became frustrated that my business wasn't growing
as quickly as I wanted."

Many new marketers that step into the arena may find themselves with these all too common experiences. At first, it is all about survival and endurance. Some don't live through their first rejection before they move on and quit. Some are a bit tougher and may face multiple rejections but eventually succumb.

I experienced many negatives and became frustrated that my business wasn't growing as quickly as I wanted. I sought out coaching from my uplines and any training I could that might make the journey a bit more enjoyable and rewarding.

I continued to plug along, had some meager success but found I was still far from my selected goals. Looking back on this time (hindsight) I now understand that I had fallen into the trap of letting my potential partners choose me. I believe this was evident in two ways.

First, I had taken the rejection personally and this began to wear away at my self-confidence. This revealed itself through the lack of conviction in the words I used and the tone of my voice. I was seeking people that would be committed but yet my manner did not display the exact kind of commitment that I was trying to attract. I received exactly what I was broadcasting.

Second, stemming from my confidence issues, I would prospect and present my program in what I can best categorize as "white noise". I have heard it said that inside a dog's brain is a constant stream of low-level static. That was me. Nervous chatter and way too much "telling and selling". If you need to convince people to join your enterprise, they may enter but not of their own commitment. These same people will need a higher degree of assurance and continued convincing through every activity or adversity. This, in most cases, will generate high degrees of negativity for YOU. You will find yourself spending otherwise precious, productive hours coaxing and consoling and coercing and convincing and counseling because your team signed up on YOUR reasons.

You should assess the strength of your business by the strength of those that are joining you. They may not match your level of commitment or dedication. They may not match your intensity and drive. They may not match many other attributes but, I believe, the one element that you should seek most of all is desire.

You may yourself have limited skills but if you possess an UNLIMITED DESIRE, you can and will accomplish anything you set your sights on. This is what you should also be looking for in your prospective business partners.

Where's your market?

I n the business section of this morning's Indianapolis Star, I read a couple of items relating to labor that I found interesting.

Here are some stats from the U.S. Census Bureau:

  • There are 149.6 million workers, age 16 and older in the U.S. work force in July 2005.
  • There are 10.3 million people classified as self-employed workers.
  • 4.5 million people are reported to be working from home.
  • There are 7.3 million people who hold down more than one job.

In a separate news items by Associated Press, here's another part of the story that bears some consideration:
From a survey of more than 27,000 people that lost their jobs recently, here's what was reported. Of those that lost jobs this year, 94 percent cited changes at their company as the reason, this number up from 64 percent in a 2001 survey. In 2002, this number was 75 percent and in 2003, it represented 79 percent of the result.

These changes occurred most often due to restructuring, merger, sale, or major relocation of the respective business operations.

When people you are presenting your program to, suggest that they are looking for something safe and secure, do you think they can actually find it? Look again at the number of people that are holding more than one job - 7.3 million people - how many of these have you been talking to about your biz-op?
